Planning your Move

Whether you are moving across town or across the country, GMAC Real Estate Northwest can help make your move a successful one. Moving can be an exciting experience filled with anticipation. Planning is the key to making your move as enjoyable as possible for your entire family.

If you’ve ever moved before, you know the endless preparations and decisions can be a bit overwhelming. Completing many tasks and arrangements ahead of time will make moving easier.

Moving Checklist

Send Change of Address to:

Post Office: complete a forwarding address kit

Charge Accounts, Credit Cards

Subscriptions: Sometimes requires several weeks to change the address

Relatives and Friends

Don’t Forget:

Bank: Transfer funds, arrange check-cashing in new city, notify the bank that you may be using your bank card more for a little while in case a fraud alert comes up while you are buying new furniture and supplies and causes you to be declined.

Insurance: Notify new location for coverage: life, health, fire, auto.

❑ Various Registrations: Transfer of car title registration  and driver's license are required for updating a change of address, city windshield sticker, motor club membership.  The Departments of Motor Vehicles in Washington and Idaho both have  online services,

Utility Companies: Gas, light, water, telephone, perhaps fuel; get refund of deposits; arrange for immediate service in new location.

Route Deliveries: Laundry, newspaper, milk, diapers; changeover of services.

School Records: Ask for copies or transfer of children’s records.

Medical, Dental, Prescription Histories: Ask doctor and dentist for referrals, transfer needed prescriptions, eyeglasses, x-rays.

Church, Club, Civic Organizations: Transfer memberships, get letter of introduction.

Pets: Ask about regulations for licenses, vaccinations. If you are moving out of state (to Hawaii for instance) you may have to prepare for up to six months in advance.

And be Sure to:

Plan for special care needs of infants and children

Empty freezer, plan use of foods. Start eating all your perishables before using those cans of soup.

Defrost freezer/refrigerator. Place charcoal inside to dispel odors.

Have appliances serviced for moving.

Clean rugs or clothing before moving; have them wrapped for moving.

❑ Confirm details with your mover: insurance coverage, packing and unpacking labor, arrival day, various shipping papers, method and time of expected payment. Also, check with the moving company to get a BINDING estimate. If you don't then when you get to the other end, they may wants thousands more dollars and hold your stuff until you pay (or settle). Always use a reputable company. The lowest bid may not always be the best deal.

And on Moving Day:

Carry currency, jewelry, and documents yourself, or use registered mail.

Plan for transporting pets, including water. sometimes a small block of ice in the pet carrier will be enough to hydrate on a trip and not spill all over the car.

Carry traveler’s checks for quick, available funds.

Let close friends or relatives know your route and the schedule you will travel, including overnight stops. Use them as a message headquarters, and check in at pre-determined times so they will know you are on track and o.k., and so you can receive any new important information.

Double-check closets, drawers, shelves to be sure they are empty.

Leave all old keys needed by new tenant or owner with your Sales Associate or other contact person.
